THE SEX FILES: Gay Pride in The Merry Merry Month Of…June.

I happened to attend one of San Fran’s infamous Gay Pride parades a couple of years back. That Sunday happened to be one of the most inspiring of my life as I walked and watched the parade with a buddy and none other than Airforce Amy of HBO’s Cathouse: The Series fame (name dropper that I am). I admit to tears coming to my eyes more than once witnessing the outpouring of support happening around me.

We all know of the various LGBT Pride celebrations that happen in June, Gay Pride Month but beyond popular/ist well-known gay-friendly cities like San Francisco, and New York and L.A. there are plenty of happenings in places far and wide.

I have listed a few below and shout-out my best wishes to everybody no matter your sexual proclivities.

6/22 to 6/24-The windy city of course supports a large gay population and very much like lots of big American cities there are many things to do in the month of June for the straight, gay and otherwise of Chicago. Sporting events, food tastings, and plays mainly take place during the 3rd week of June, with their parade like San Francisco’s, taking place this last weekend of the month.

6/23-Houston, Texas has one of the largest and most visible gay communities in the country, and their Pride Festival and Parade celebrates its 34th anniversary on the 23rd this year.

6/23 & 6/30th-Santa Fe, New Mexico isn’t the largest city (pop. 65,000) but it does support a lively gay community. On June 23rd they are throwing their Gay Pride celebration. Just 50 miles apart and the proceeding weekend Albuquerque “The Duke City” is throwing there Gay pride celebration so one could certainly hit both for these current weekends. The ABQ Gay Pride has shifted to the end of the month for this year, a few weeks later than their usual.

6/23-6/24-Seattle’s Gay Pride Parade and Festival drew more then 350,000 last year. Also during this weekend is the 6th annual Seattle Pridefest. Two weeks after Capitol City Pride in Olympia and Spokane Gay Pride, plus one week after Portland Gay Pride in Oregon, there is a lot happening ‘up there’ around the same time in the month in June.

6/24-Taking its name from NYC’s infamous Stonewall Inn riot in that great year of riots, 1969 and arguably prompting the gay rights movement as real and present for the first time, the small city of Wilton Manors (known by many to be the center of Broward County’s gay scene) hosts Fort Lauderdale’s Stonewall Summer Pride Festival and Parade.

And just to show we celebrate our gay brothers and sisters off this continent:

6/22-7/1-Dublin’s Gay Pride Festival (known as the Dublin Pride LGBTQ Festival) celebrates this city of more than 1.2 million with events and the Dublin Gay Pride Parade set for the final Saturday.

6/22-23-Muslims in the Turkish capital of Istanbul are said to be among the most accepting folks when it comes to their fellow gay male and lesbian fellows. The Istanbul Gay Pride Festival known as Istanbul Onurhaftasi is quickly becoming a major event.
