Fall Out Boy: Save Rock and Roll
Fall Out Boy
Save Rock and Roll
(Island Records)
Fall Out Boy is back with Save Rock and Roll after their four-year hiatus. “The Phoenix” starts off sounding like the band is ready to go into war, “Put on your war paint/You are a brick tied to me that’s dragging me down.” Get ready to play mortal combat. FOB adds a grungy-goth darker side with such lyrics as, “dance alone to the beat of your heart.”
“My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” is the first single off the album with lead singer Pete Wentz’s highly distinguishable vocals. It steps into the realm of Infinity on High (2007), but matures to a heightened pop level with the catchy radio tune chorus, “So light ’em up, up, up/Light ’em up, up, up/I’m on fire.” “Alone Together” is similar to their hit songs “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s an Arms Race” and “Thanks For The Memories,” with catchy chorus lines and guitar hooks.
For the dancey, pop rocker fans, “Where Did The Party Go” is the perfect track. Skip to “Just One Yesterday,” “The Mighty Fall” and “Save Rock And Roll” for collaborations from Foxes, Big Sean, and Elton John. The songs are nothing special, but are a wacky mix of a past rock boy band gone bad. It’s so mainstream with a loss of connection. FOB’s new presence doesn’t compare to past albums Take This to Your Grave (2003), From Under the Cork Tree (2005) or Infinity on High (2007).
