Bosnian Rainbows played The Bowery Ballroom this past Sunday to fans and new comers alike. The band consists of former The Mars Volta members, Omar Rodríguez-López (guitar, backing vocals) and Deantoni Parks (drums, keyboards), alongside Le Butcherettes vocalist Teri Gender Bender and Nicci Kasper (keyboards).  Opening up the show was Sacramento based duo, Sister Crayon. Lounge style singing paired with up-tempo, electro pop and live drumming really got the crowd going.

After a long intermission, Bosnian Rainbows finally took the stage. From the start of the first song, barefooted front-woman Teri Gender Bender  really was getting into it (dancing, striking poses, and viciously scratching her arms and legs…) And how could she not? She is part of one of the tightest touring bands around. After a few songs deep into their set and after becoming mesmerized with Gender Bender’s elegant yet playful stage presence, the audience began to pick up on how remarkable the other musicians are. Deantoni Parks not only plays a three-piece drum kit (mostly with his left hand alone), but also plays keys at the very same time.  Between songs, Gender Bender thanked and complimented the audience strictly in Spanish, her native language, but sang in English. This only added to the mystique that this band creates. To define this band as indie pop/rock music is an under statement, a blow really.

These 4 incredibly talented souls come together to make new inviting, haunting, music that also takes a little bit from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Mexico and California living bleeds through most of all. Songs like “Turtle Neck” and “Mother, Father, Set Us Free” fully immerse the listener into their colorful world.
