David Lynch is one of my favorite contemporary directors, and his unique, twisted style extends to music as well as film. Lynch’s second LP, The Big Dream, is tighter than his debut, Crazy Clown Time (and benefits from a far less creepy title as well).

There’s no denying that Lynch is a talented player, flinging together blues, jam, and electronica influences like a musical Large Hadron Collider.  The title track features stuttery blues guitar and a digital drumbeat that calls up comparisons to acts like Aphex Twin. “Last Call” is much more electronic overall, while “Sun Can’t See Me No More” opens with spoken word before delving into a Southern rock vibe.  Dare I even say it, there’s a sexy riff on “I Want You,” and the murmured lyrics keep things from getting too creepy in that recognizable Lynch way.

It has to be said that Lynch doesn’t have the most melodic singing voice in the world. He sounds a bit like your dad singing karaoke, but at least he’s a cool dad. At any rate, his warble is perfectly suited for his cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Hollis Brown.” Start there, and if his brand of electronic music suits you, plunge right on in for a surreal experience from an artist lacking pretension.
