Yankees Wives @ The Hudson Guild Theatre

Yankees WivesDavid Rimmer directs six stellar actresses in a play he’s written about the women behind professional baseball players. Yankees Wives is a solid two act hour and a half of an interwoven story of characters interactions in “The Wives Lounge” in the inner rooms at Yankee Stadium.

Though the drama is set up easily, I genrally came to conclude that the performances here outshine the writing. Eliza Simpson’s “Wyla Lee” is especially strong; McKenna Fox and Christina Marie provide perfect comic relief when needed; Chudney Skyes is a side dish of a strong presence as a wronged then forgiving wife “Marceline Davis;” Samantha Strelitz’s wounded “Pam Monday”, and Jennifer Laine Williams keep this all together with her pit bull of a presence as the leader, ‘mommy’ of the wives, “Sally.”

The action here takes place in what I felt was a well outfitted one room set; kudos to Allison MCGrath set designer and Rimmer does manage the six women well as they often swirl around one another, enter and exit from both sides of the stage and pretty much keep the action and story flowing. I just wish there was slightly better writing at times.

Yankee Wives is playing at The Hudson Guild Theatre and you can grab a reasonably priced ticket at www.yankeewives.com.
