STN MTN/Kauai from Childish Gambino (aka, Donald Glover who wrote for 30 Rock and was an actor on the hit show Community) is a mixtape full of charming oddities, scintillating singles and unforgettably layered hip hop dynamics. This release exudes much vocal brawn from Childish Gambino as well as from all the other artists featured. It also boasts an impressive ability of weaving the most random of popular culture catchphrases and ideas into an album that’s already so clever in its own variety. Anything that one would joyfully need is amongst the songs here for one’s enjoyment. If you seek witty, decorative spoken word bravado, it’s here. If you need a sugary sweet, chill-vibe R&B escapade, it’s on “Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good).” If you need an edgy, hardcore, unflinching, instrumentally simplistic taunt, the dismissive “No Small Talk” features female rapper Kari Faux. Childish Gambino’s rhyme skills careen through ambiences of sound like a high-speed rail when it needs to. Each song pushes through a unique styling that has long been missed and absent from mainstream radio. His style is so captivating and at times boasts a hero-vs.-the-rest-of-the-world sensibility in such a distinctive way. As it praises summer, the blazing, bleary reminiscent “Poke” reaches an impressive arc enhanced with the lyrical prowess of rapper Steve G Lover III. “Late Night in Kauai” alters a breezy effortless stream of consciousness delivery that begins with a more spoken word piece by Jaden Smith.
