Not one to turn down a good time on a Monday night, I was more than happy to catch a risqué performance in the LES’s Slipper Room, a charming, intimate venue with brass drop ceilings, wooden floors, and heavy burgundy curtains hanging over a small stage. The show, Phaedra’s Cabaret: Awaken the Beast, produced by Marie-Audrey Désy, is an intriguing mix of burlesque acts and live original music.

The cabaret featured some stand-out burlesque performances including a playful, bumblebee-themed number by Timmy no Trousers, a funky, gender-bending dance by Ava La Roux, and an existential metamorphosis (a sexy one, of course), performed by Ms. Minty Newport.

Making the evening especially enjoyable was the cabaret band, Mavis & The Mud Flaps, a mix of musicians playing a number of saucy, original tunes. Jason Ewald’s vocals on his original song “Looking Everywhere” were particularly gorgeous, and Gillian Harwin entertained the audience with her delightfully raunchy singing and range of instrumental skills on the stand-up bass, ukulele, and even the musical saw.

There are two more performances of Phaedra’s Cabaret: Awaken the Beast on Mondays April 13 and 27 with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at The Slipper Room.
