NYC Summer Festivals and Restaurants to Pair with Them

Electric Zoo FestivalSummer is one of the most exciting times to be in the Big Apple. Everything gets all hot and sweaty and it seems everyone is looking for fun in the sun. These are a few of our picks for festivals that will have you shaking it this summer along with some nearby neighborhood favorites where you can grab some grub.

Afropunk & Bedouin Tent Restaurant

Afropunk continues to be one of the most impressive and well-curated festivals in the world and this year is no exception. The stupendous lineup includes the likes of Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz, Danny Brown and many more—see the full listing here—who will take the stage in Brooklyn on Aug. 22 and 23. Also, tickets are under $100, making it one of the best deals you’ll find for a festival, especially one with a lineup of this caliber.

If you’re looking for a quick bite, the Bedouin Tent Restaurant is cheap, fast and a great way to have a healthy snack before getting back to the show. The restaurant’s offerings include freshly baked pita and traditional Middle Eastern fare that is delicious and affordable. Make sure you bring cash because the place doesn’t accept any plastic.

Electric Zoo and Harlem Shake

Electric Zoo is one of the biggest festivals on the East Coast and always brings an eclectic mix of some of the world’s best DJs and electronic musicians. The Chemical Brothers are back on top and the legendary big-beat duo will headline this year’s festival at Randall’s Island Park. Prepare for a massive weekend of EDM this Labor Day and even bigger crowds. According to British Airways, there have been up to 150,000 people (!) who make it down to dance their cares away over the long weekend.

While you’re on Randall’s Island, try hitting up Harlem Shake for delicious diner fare with a retro chic that’s both cool and comfortable. “We wanted to bring back the Harlem of the past,” owner Jelena Pasic told the New York Daily News. The restaurant has made a name for itself as the go-to place for tasty burgers and shakes for those in the know.

MoMA PS1 Warm Up & Cyclo

Warm Up at MoMA PS1 continues to be one of the coolest parties of the summer with a different lineup playing the 21st Street art institution each weekend through Sept. 5. “Every weekend has a different vibe with a baseline of having this guaranteed good time feeling,” Margaret Knowles, curatorial assistant, said to The Guardian. Don’t miss out on the Aug. 29 party featuring Chilean DJ extraordinaire Matias Aguayo.

For those seeking a sandwich in between shows, we recommend going by Cyclo, a relatively recent addition to 47th Avenue in Long Island City. The Vietnamese eatery does a darn fine Banh Mi and the ginger lemon soda is just the thing to keep you cool on a hot day.
