Kendrick Lamar in simple terms is genius. He’s true to his craft, pushes the envelope and educates you on the ‘hood all at once. The choice of production is eclectic and lets me know he’s influenced by all types of music. “King Kunta” is a certifiable hit and allows us to remember the Alex Haley story in such a clever way. It addresses an industry where there can be a lot of pressure to fit in.  “Alright,” my second fave, is in my mind the song for everybody. It’s carefree and the 2015 rap version of “Don’t Worry Be Happy”; it’s a song for hope. “Complexion” is so necessary in 2015, it opens the closeted issues of skin color within the black culture, a very touchy subject most wouldn’t dare to speak on. “Mortal Man” carries a deep message on the humanity of the people we call celebrities. The expectations that are placed on them and how easily that can change. The album as a whole has a theme and walks you through building anticipation while telling the story of many who don’t have a voice. “These Walls” is a well-written and articulated song. Kendrick is so clever with how he slides such meaningful words into a groove. It’s a Saturday afternoon on the couch or riding around, enjoying the cruise. Ir’s multifaceted music with purpose. I appreciate his craft and if you base your music choices off those qualities, you’ll enjoy!
