The brand new behind-the-scenes hardcover from Taschen, The Making Of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ tells the story, in glorious production sketches, movie stills, still photographs (on and off set), conceptual designs from the Kubrick archives, and well-researched prose of the lead actors, senior production designers, special-effects experts and of course Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, who joined to create one of the classics of science fiction cinema.
From the opening chapter “Journey Beyond The Stars†we learn about director Stanley Kubrick’s early professional life working for “Look†magazine and into his first few films…as we do in later chapters get into the full story of “2001,†a film that took three years to complete. We meet author of the story Arthur C. Clarke of course, get some insight into the back and forth he and Kubrick got into, and meet all the relevant characters, some interviewed specifically for this book, some 40 odd plus years after they worked on this movie.
Author Piers Bizony’s research took him several years, but this tome truly leaves no stone unturned on the masterpiece that is one of Kubrick’s crowning glories. The designer of the book, M/M (Paris) is an art and design partnership consisting of Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag and their contribution here is impeccable.
The Making Of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ was previously only available as part of a multi-volume Collector’s Edition. Now you can grab this single volume and delve deep into this classic movie’s background story, creation and visual history. It is well worth the trip.
