Cocktails get Creative at The Standing Room

FlowerOne of my favorite questions to ask fellow NYC residents is where they like to bring their out-of-town guests. As a host, you’re constantly looking for places that embody the city’s current vibe, because nothing could be more embarrassing than a visitor saying they weren’t impressed—or even worse, bored—with their visit.

Enter LIC’s The Standing Room, a charming cocktail bar and comedy club that would be a great let’s-hop-in-here-for-one-or-two-before-dinner spot. The dim lighting and rustic appeal at the bar create an intimate ambiance that would also be well-suited for a date, but it’s a small space, so probably not a Tinder date.

CucumberWhat really impresses at the bar is the creative cocktails created by mixologists Shige Kabashima from Angel’s Share and Joji Watanabe from the Experimental Cocktail Club. The full-flavored drinks are delicious and well-presented, several making for insta worthy pictures including the Flower (see above), a cocktail made of dry gin, lavender, elderflower and cranberry served in a light bulb, and the Cucumber (see right), a spicy tequila, cucumber and lime concoction poured into a frozen bell pepper. Most drinks are $11 or $12.

Comedy shows are hosted several nights a week in a small room in the back, so if the evening is going well, there may not be a reason to trek it back to Manhattan right away (though it’s only one stop from Grand Central on the 7).
