Texan rapper/force-of-nature J’Moris has released the four-track EP, Extra for us all.  Combining hip-hop, southern rap, dub and trap, the four tunes here pull no punches in the style of 2-Chainz and T.I. as well as Nipsey Hustle and Biggie Smalls. As a self-proclaimed “product of his environment,” J’Moris seems to have amassed all his influences into this mix and it plays out rather stark and personal.

We get the title track first. With pulsating ‘gated’ keys and snapping backbeat, J’Moris is impressing upon the listener just what it is he knows about life and what he has to say about it all. The tune that follows, the ballad “Misbehave” sees the first use of piano here (something I have to admit I love hearing on rap records) and quite a lot of effects across J’Moris’ singing. There’s a cool stuttering beat here but lots of the lyrics are simply lost in the production.

“Not at All” presents another piano centred track, but this time it’s roiling along. Here we get a solid rap about J’Moris having nothing in life and his view that “life is what life gives.” Bleak, strong stuff coming from this serious young artist, to be sure. These are his best lyrics on the EP.

“Speed Boat” ends Extra. It’s my favorite of the four. It’s got echoing atmospheric sounds, and is the fastest and most fun rap of all on Extra. Things don’t need be so serious all the time even from such a series artist. Yes, the rap is full of substance, as every track is but the delivery is especially wonderful on this one.

For the most part, J’Moris delivers solid, thoughtful, and moving tunes on Extra.
