Pete Rock and Smif-N-Wessun: Monumental
If this were the mid 90’s, a collaboration between beat wiz Pete Rock and grimy hip hop duo Smif-N-Wessun (Tek and Steele) would have seemed highly unlikely, but fast forward nearly 20 years, and we have the Pete Rock-produced Monumental.
Call it great marketing now, but back in the day Pete delivered smooth productions that were nicely layered, blending hip hop and soul; Smif-N-Wessun (aka Cocoa Brovaz) were hardcore New York rappers, speaking openly and honestly about street life. Nonetheless the collabo is nostalgic, only because Pete’s stamp is all over it.
Guest appearances from a bevy of rappers gives variety from hip hop, reggae, and latin-inspired rhythms; Sean Price and Styles P on are on the current single, “That’s Hard,” “Roses” features Philly rapper Freeway, and “This One,” which features Top Dog (of Boot Camp Clik) and reggae-rap artist Jahdan Blakkamoore. Other showcases include Raekwon, Bun B, Memphis Bleek, Black Rob, and Hurricane G.
